Unconscious Leadership

𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? 

I know I have.

Those are the moments that we are 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆. We are not staying awake to the present moment and the subtle shifts around us. It’s not until something significant arises, like an icy road, traffic jam or unplanned detour, that we wake back up. This abrupt, unexpected waking pumps adrenaline and cortisol through our systems causing us to 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 to the challenges before us.

Research shows that the 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 (𝟳𝟱%) 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲*.  It’s not that leaders get up in the morning and say, “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘐’𝘮 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺”. The reality is we all have unconscious, reactive aspects to our nature. The key question is, “𝙂𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮, 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙖 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙, 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚?”

We know from the research that for 3 out of every 4 leaders, the answer is most likely “𝙣𝙤”*.

So, how can more leaders stay awake and consciously navigate these complexities and pressures? It helps to center ourselves with the following questions.
𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲? (𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵 1)
𝟮. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲?

These are not questions to be asked once in a lifetime, once a decade or even once a year. They are ongoing inquiries that Integrative Leaders™ use as a 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴 to guide themselves in consciously navigating the challenges they face.
